We will be accepting applications for our next class of apprentices Monday, June 4 through Friday, June 15 between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m.

We will be accepting applications for the following programs at these locations:

  • Plumbing | Pipefitting – Cincinnati, Columbus, Dayton, Lexington
  • Fire protection – Cincinnati, Columbus, Dayton
  • Sheet metal – Cincinnati, Columbus, Dayton

We invite you to stop by the appropriate office location for the trade program you are interested in to complete the application process and schedule your interview. Bring a copy of your high school diploma, GED or a letter from school with an anticipated graduation date, and you will take a math test during the application process.

All our apprenticeship programs are free and consist of a minimum of 8,000 on-the-job training hours and 576 hours of classroom learning over the course of four years. We also offer a wide variety of classes outside the core required apprenticeship classes to help you broaden your skills and challenge yourself.

Additionally, all of our apprentices earn 20 to 25 credit hours towards an associate degree at Columbus State over the course of the four-year program. To earn your associate degree, you will need to take an additional 10 general education classes at Columbus State, or have your credits transferred to a school closer to you to complete your degree program.

People Behind TP Mechanical Introduces Tony Marple

Tony has been with TP Mechanical 20 years, starting in our apprenticeship program and immediately working his way up to become a superintendent. To this day, Tony continues to show his appreciation for and dedication to the apprenticeship program as he has been an instructor for more than 10 years. Three years ago, Tony moved from the field to our service department, and currently serves as our Columbus Plumbing Services Manager.

Tony works with our existing and new customers to support their plumbing and HVAC system needs. He feels it is important to be a trusted advisor to customers by offering honest advice and educating the staff about their current systems.

Tony stands out to customers and his team because he cares and values each customer’s needs.

“Tony is genuine, honest, hardworking and always willing to go the extra mile for his customer and his team,” stated Tara Teepe, Marketing Coordinator at TP Mechanical.

Tony’s goal is always to build an everlasting relationship with customers, and to make sure TP Mechanical is the first name they think of for any of their mechanical needs. He wants his customers to know they can always depend on TP Mechanical to provide them with quality and cost-effective solutions.

When asked why he believes TP Mechanical stands apart from other mechanical contractors, Tony offered the following:

In 2018, TP Mechanical is looking forward to many exciting opportunities and challenges. Our continued dedication to being an industry and community leader positions us for success throughout the New Year.

We are fortunate to work in a peak time for our industry’s market, in which many project opportunities for the commercial and service divisions exist. While, these upcoming opportunities could present us with challenges, we will utilize our knowledge, experience and resources to achieve our goals and provide the service our customers deserve and have grown to expect from TP Mechanical.

As a company, we must continue to focus on training, innovation and making use of new technologies and techniques. Keeping our facilities, services and employees up-to-date with industry trends, standards and training allows us to deliver comprehensive mechanical services to our clients while helping our employees achieve their professional and personal goals.

During 2017, we have had great success working in our communities to support their needs. In November, through our gala fundraising efforts, we were able to raise $18,000 for A Kid Again. This organization provides resources for families of children with special needs. We must continue to support and invest in our communities as we can only be as successful as the communities we live and do business in.

I am looking forward to what 2018, and the future, holds for TP Mechanical.

City of Columbus Implements Alternative Self-Certification Process as New Ohio Plumbing Code Takes Effect

City of Columbus Implements Alternative Self-Certification Process as New Ohio Plumbing Code Takes Effect

Notable changes were made to Section 312 Tests and Inspections of the Ohio Plumbing Code (OPC), specifically addressing the testing of systems using compressed air. November 1, 2017, was the official adoption date for the updated OPC, based on the 2015 International Plumbing Code.

Beginning December 1, 2017, any installation tested with compressed air will be disapproved.

There were prior amendments to this OPC section in January and October 2016, which are included in the newest adoption of the code. These original revisions were driven by concerns over increasing litigation stemming from testing systems with compressed air.

Due to the OPC changes, as well as those to the Residential Code of Ohio Section 108.8, the City of Columbus Department of Building and Zoning Services (BZS) decided to implement an alternative self-certification option for plumbing contractors.

The OPC does permit alternative testing methods, if approved by the manufacturer of the plumbing system materials. The Columbus BZS verified all manufacturers are accepting a vacuum test, but no companies will accept a test with compressed air or other compressed gas.

“Approved testing methods must be adhered to as over-pressurizing a system with air instead of a vacuum could result in an inspector requiring all piping to be removed and replaced,” said John McCann, TP Mechanical’s Operations Leader for the Columbus Region. “Staying up-to-date and compliant with codes not only saves our clients time and money, but also ensures their facilities are functional and safe.”

Safety First, Always First

TP Mechanical has performed, as of early August, more than 2 million man-hours of work without a lost-time accident – nearly one-third the industry average. We work closely with OSHA, participating in its safety training programs and Voluntary Protection Program to reduce accidents on the jobsite.

One of our biggest innovations is completing almost 30 percent of our project in the regulated environment of our fabrication shop before starting work on-site. More than 60 employees staff the shop for around-the-clock operations, incorporating advanced automation technology such as automated welding machines and tracking software to ensure workflow is managed smoothly.

Riddle believes TP Mechanical will continue to find success with a focus on innovation and a dedication to safety, “I believe that over the next couple of years we should experience continuous growth in our industry.”

That’s why we’re committed to training the next generation of skilled craft workers. TP Mechanical’s apprenticeship program and ongoing education initiatives offer employees the chance to advance their knowledge and expertise.

The Apprenticeship Program’s success with employees is due in part to the combination of in-class and on-site job training. The in-class portion of our program is enhanced by quality instructors who have years of experience and were selected by TP Mechanical personnel. The on-site training takes place in the field where you will get the chance to acquire knowledge alongside their classmates.

Our current group of apprentices will attend a recognition event on June 19, and those who have reached the end of the four-year program will officially graduate. TP Mechanical will advertise for applicants to the next class of apprentices in June. Be on the lookout and you could be a part of the program next year.

Three trade options are offered for extended training during the four-year Apprenticeship Program.

Fire Protection

  • Preparation for State of Ohio or Kentucky fire protection licensing tests

  • Processes that go into plumbing and piping systems, fixtures, and welding
