TP Mechanical’s Culture of Safety: A Fit for Cabot Corporation Project in Carrolton

TP Mechanical’s culture of safety made our team the ideal choice when Cabot Corporation – a global manufacturer of specialty chemicals and performance materials – sought a plumbing and HVAC contractor for its new administration building in Carrolton, Kentucky.

When Cabot announced a call for bids for plumbing and HVAC work on its new administration building – which will feature executive offices, an employee breakroom and equipment storage space – the bar for safety was set high. “We always preach safety first with our teams, so it becomes second nature for us,” says Jeff Keller, TP’s project manager for this job. “It wasn’t hard for us to meet Cabot’s expectations, because we’re already safety-oriented.”

Cabot’s stringent safety requirements for the project included full-time use of safety glasses, hardhats and reflective vests on the building site; implementation of belt tethers for all tools; and mandatory lift-certifications and power-tool certifications for workers, among other criteria. Led by TP Mechanical’s Jeff Keller as well as superintendent Tyler Tremain and safety manager Brittany Knue, TP’s team was awarded the bid in part because we were the only bidder able to meet all of Cabot’s stringent safety requirements.

Once on the job, the safety of our work was overseen at all times not just by TP’s own management teams but also representatives of Jacobs Engineering Group, the owner representative, and Turnbull-Wahlert Construction, Inc., the project’s general contractor.

With that many eyes on safety, TP rose to the occasion to meet standards not often seen on jobs of this size. “Tyler got the necessary tools in place and came in prepared,” says Keller. “We knew there had been other trade groups onsite before us that were unsuccessful. We knew there would be no second chances on this project.”

TP Mechanical will be taking applications April 22 through May 3 for the 2019 Apprenticeship Class. Positions will be open at each of the four offices and include:

  • Plumbers—Kentucky office
  • Plumbers and sheet metal—Cincinnati office
  • Plumbers, sheet metal, and sprinkler fitters—Columbus and Dayton offices

What is the Apprenticeship Program?

The Apprenticeship Program is an important feeder for TP’s workforce. An Accredited Apprenticeship Program through Columbus State, it consists of a minimum of 8,000 on-the-job training hours and 576 hours of classroom learning over the course of four years. The best leaders and the best results come from the program – a direct result of TP’s investment in its employees and the future. The Apprenticeship Program is the key to recruiting and filling the field jobs; it enables TP Mechanical to educate their own employees and guarantees the highest quality employees.

The Apprenticeship Program is also an important part of TP’s history. In place since the 1980s, the Apprenticeship Program is where many of TP’s leaders got their start. This includes President and CEO Bill Riddle, who joined TP Mechanical 34 years ago as the company’s 38th apprentice.

Mike Kelley, who completed the program in 1987 and now holds several master licenses, says the program instilled a major passion in him to give back and teach others. “This is a very worthwhile program to go through,” he says. His wife, Teresa, joined TP Mechanical in 1999 and is now the Apprenticeship Coordinator. “Not only did the Apprenticeship Program give my husband an avenue to provide for our family, most importantly, TP Mechanical provided him with that opportunity to learn and grow in a skilled trade,” she says. We both are very thankful for that and hope we can pass along what our family gained from this program to the next generation.”

No qualifications are needed to join the Apprenticeship Program. We’ll teach you valuable, hands-on skills and you earn a paycheck as you learn.

The four-year program is held in sessions, one night a week, from August through May, at our Kentucky, Cincinnati and Columbus locations. Class sizes are small and made up of approximately five to eight apprentices. Classes are taught by TP employees, including superintendents and project managers—many who came up through the apprenticeship program themselves.

You learn all the technical code required for your particular skill, as well as other important topics for acquiring your licenses, such as:

  • Welding
  • Refrigeration (basic knowledge of systems)
  • Hydronics
  • Steam systems

In just four years, you can have your journeyman’s license in HVAC, plumbing and sprinklers and be on your way to a fulfilling career.

Costume Safety Tips

  • Choose fire-resistant costumes, wigs and accessories.
  • Avoid potentially dangerous props, like hard swords.
  • Opt for non-toxic face paint or makeup instead of masks.
  • Decorate costumes and treat bags with reflective tape if your child will be out after dark.

Trick-or-treating Safety Tips

  • Accompany children under 12 at all times.
  • Insist that trick-or-treating only be done in familiar areas.
  • Plan a route if older children are going alone.
  • Designate a specific time for children to return home.
  • Instruct children to never enter a stranger’s car or home.
  • Remind children to always look both ways before crossing a street, to be aware of their surroundings and to use sidewalks whenever possible.
  • Tell your children not to eat any treats until they return home.

Prevent Backpack-related Injuries

According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, over 5,000 children under the age of 19 suffered backpack-related injuries last year. The vast majority of these injuries were caused by overloaded and incorrectly fitted backpacks.

  • The proper size (never wider or longer than your child’s torso, never hanging more than 4 inches below waist)
  • Padded back and shoulder straps
  • Multiple compartments and a waist or chest strap to help balance the weight
  • Reflective, lightweight material

Purchasing a good backpack for your child is just the first step in preventing backpack-related injuries. Be sure to encourage them to always use both straps when carrying their backpacks and to only pack what is absolutely necessary to carry.
